I love a good cupcake and baking is one of my favorite pastimes so I decided to make unicorn cupcakes. I’ve always wanted to work with fondant so that’s what I used for the unicorn horn toppers. Ever play with playdoh? Fondant is exactly like playdoh so it was very fun to work with. While I would normally scour the internet for fondant recipes from scratch, I found some really cheap pre-made pink colored fondant at a local cake store (which I will be frequenting from now on). I used my go-to white almond sour cream recipe for the cake and my usual almond buttercream icing. These tasted amazing! Of course I did not eat them all, I ended up giving most of them away as gifts. The pictures don’t do them justice – there was way more glitter but the camera does not capture that very well. I will definitely be making these again soon – maybe next time I will buy two different color fondants for the horns.
I love cake. It’s the one thing I look forward to at weddings. A couple of weeks ago I decided to make a layer cake. It was pretty simple and looks like something a unicorn would devour in seconds.
I started with a crumb coat, which I learned to do through youtube videos.
Then I put 5 different colors of almond buttercream icing in a piping bag and made little dots of icing on the cake. I flattened them out with a spatula. Then repeated over and over again until it was finished (about 30 minutes later).
I repeated the pattern on top of the cake which was much easier to do than the sides.
The cake recipe I used was the White Almond Sour Cream Cake (WASC) recipe found here. It tasted just like a wedding cake and I’m pretty sure this will be my go to cake recipe from now on.
